While the concept of the game of Checkers dates back to nearly 3000 BC it’s still popular to this day. With how beloved it is, it should come as no surprise that there are all sorts of modern takes on the classic, like this Mario Checkers set.
This is the Collector’s set, which features the game board and all the pieces in a collectible tin box. The case artwork pays homage to the Super Mario brothers’ series, and what you can expect inside!
The game board itself is an 8” square featuring a 64 box Checkers board. Instead of the normal black and white spaces, though, you’ll find coins and question mark blocks!
A total of 24 game pieces are included as well, with a dozen each in both red and green. The green tokens feature Luigi’s face on them, while red displays Mario! This special set even includes their famous hats for use “kinging” – 2 of each!
If you’re tired of Checkers, flip the board over to reveal a whole different game – Tic Tac Toe. A 9×9 mini square board has question mark and coin blocks to serve as your canvas. The same game tokens may be used!
It’s the perfect set for any fan of Super Mario and enjoyable any time you’ve got two players!
How do you play Mario Checkers?
You play Mario Checkers with the same rules as normal Checkers:
- Each player places their game pieces on the coin squares (every other square) over the first three rows
- Take turns moving one piece forward diagonally each turn
- If an opponent’s piece is in the way, and there is an open space on the other side, “jump” their piece with yours, then remove their piece from the board
- Any time you reach your opponent’s last row, your piece will be “kinged” using the hat
- Kinged pieces are allowed to move both forward and backwards
- You win the game when your opponent runs out of pieces or may make no more legal moves
Both the Checkers and the Tic Tac Toe games included are designed to take around 10 minutes per round. They’re great fun for both children and adults, so why not invite everyone’s favorite plumber over for game night?
