Giant outdoor chess is exactly the same game as regular chess – even played the same. The difference lies solely in the size of the pieces. Instead of a small board stuffed away in your board game collection, this huge set is designed for the outdoors.
You play giant chess just like regular chess, with the exception that it can be safely played outdoors in your lawn or garden. All of the pieces are made from weatherproof plastic. In fact, the game may be stored outside without any need for additional maintenance. It’s waterproof, fade resistant, and pieces hold their shape.
Like a normal chess set, this giant game comes with 16 black and 16 white pieces. Despite their size, they’re actually very lightweight – so much so that a child can move them. They’ll stand up to normal breeze, but if you’re expecting wind, weigh them down. Up to 7 pounds of sand or water may be added to the bases.
If these supersized pieces still aren’t attention grabbing enough, there are two larger versions available as well. This extra-giant chess set has a 37” king and 28” tall pawns, while the very largest set has a 49” king and 40” pawns. It’s probably bigger than your kids!
This chess set doesn’t come with a board – it’s just the pieces. You could make your own with wood, stones, plastic, and ingenuity. Alternatively, a matching outdoor chess board is also available for purchase. Bonus points because you can use it to play giant outdoor checkers as well.
