Giant lawn dominoes are the perfect way to make a backyard domino game. Sure, it’s played like the standard sized version, but the jumbo-sized pieces make it fun and easy for kids too. Plus, setting up shop in the grass or sand makes for a great change of scenery from the kitchen table.

The giant lawn dominoes outdoor game takes the classic table game and brings it to new, jumbo proportions. Each domino in this set is 7” long, 5” wide, and 3.5” tall, making for big, easy to handle pieces.
Just like a standard dominoes set, you’ll find 28 game pieces in the bag. This is considered a normal Western set and contains one double six domino.
The blocks are made of wood and finished with a water-resistant varnish which allows them to be used outdoors. I still wouldn’t recommend leaving them out in the rain or submerging them in any way, as prolonged and excessive water exposure may cause warping.
Unlike the plain black and ivory tokens I remember as a kid, though, this set features fun color coding. Each of the numbers on the dominoes is assigned its own color:
- White
- Orange
- Blue
- Green
- Yellow
- Red
Not only does it make it more visually appealing, but also encourages kids who don’t know their numbers well yet to play!
Everything fits into a convenient, zippered cloth carrying case which makes for easy transport. Lawn dominoes are great for the park, beach, tailgate, camping, and anywhere else you venture!
How do you play giant dominoes?
- Place all pieces face down and shuffle
- If playing with 2 players, each person takes 7 tiles. For 3-4 players, take 5 instead
- The person with the highest double tile (same number on both sides) plays that tile face up to start
- Play rotates clockwise
- On your turn, you must select a domino that matches at least one number on a played domino, and place it adjacent to that domino
- You may place the piece on any open side of the domino, which will generally be a maximum of 3 sides, aside from the starting piece
- In the case of matching to a double, you should play the piece perpendicular with the center line
- Should you not have a playable domino, draw from the remaining face down tiles one at a time until you get one
- When the draw pile runs out, play then passes automatically to the next player
- The first player to play all their dominoes wins the hand
- Tally points and then start another hand, until the point limit is obtained by someone
- The first person to 150 points wins the game
Points are awarded for two different actions:
- When playing a domino, if the sum of numbers on ends of the chain that are NOT touching are a multiple of 5, you receive that many points (ex: 5, 10, 15)
- The hand winner scores points for dominoes remaining in other players’ hands. Tally the face value of both sides of each domino in their hands, then round the sum to the closest multiple of 5
