How come every time we play Yahtzee, you’re always so lucky? I think we need to change up the game and play a different dice game. Tonight, we’ll get the family together and play Shut the Box by WE Games. I know this game originated in a Manchester Pub, but I don’t know how many people can play the game at once. Can you play Shut the Box with 4 players?
You can play Shut the Box with 1 to 4 players. The object is to roll a pair of dice and flip down tiles numbered 1 – 9 based on the total you rolled. A 4 player game is played in rounds. Each player rolls until they cannot flip down additional tiles, and their remaining tiles are added together. Players are eliminated when their total score reaches 45.

As with all great games, Shut the Box is simple in concept, easy to learn, and addictive as you strive to do better next time. Add in the randomness and mathematical probability of dice, and you have a hit concept. Much like playing Tetris, the more you play the game, the more strategies you’ll develop to better your odds for next time.
The Shut the Box game concept actually works for any number of players, but WE games delivers a four-sided solid wooden box set. Traditionally, this game includes tiles numbered 1-9, but variations of 10-12 tiles also exist. This walnut wood box features the 10 tile variation with a velveteen surface for rolling. Each player also receives their own colored dice set so you can keep track of each player’s tiles if you’re not sitting around a table.
When playing, each player takes a full turn to roll the dice as many times as possible. With each roll, players must knock down tiles corresponding to the dice total. For instance, if you roll a 9, you have the option to flip down your 9 or a combination that equals 9 such as 4 and 5 or 7 and 2. If your remaining tiles only number 6 or lower, you may opt to roll 1 die instead. Your turn ends when you cannot flip any additional tiles. At this time, you add the sum of the unflipped tiles, and this is your score. When you reach a score of 45, you’re out of the game.
The above instructions are one variation of rules for Shut the Box. Anyone that has ever played traditional board games knows that half the fun is coming up with your own house rules to the game. I dare you to find two families that grew up playing Monopoly the same way! Play the game in whatever manner you feel is the most fun! It’s nice to unplug from social media, the Internet, and electronics to play an awesome game!
