Stepping stones, true to the name, should be placed as many inches apart as is comfortable to step from one to another. This may vary whether the intended user is a child or an adult, as height differs greatly. Generally speaking, a range of 12 to 24 inches apart should fit most uses.
When it comes to placement, measure from outside edges on the stones, not the central point. Since stones often vary in size based on design, this allows an even placement pattern. Can you just lay stepping stones on top of grass?
You can just lay stepping stones on top of grass if you desire. However, you’ll still want to make sure the surface is level to prevent stress cracking when they are stepped on. If your surface is not level, you may either dig some ground out, or add well drained crushed stone to even things out.
Alternatively, stepping stones may be placed in other locations for decorative use only (no leveling required). Use them in the pot of an indoor or outdoor plant. Try them in a terrarium, garden bed, or flower display. This will allow the colorful and beautiful designs to be seen and not damaged.
