We went to this great restaurant this past weekend, and I had my first ever steak on a stone. I enjoyed it so much, I just had to come home and replicate it. I’ve got this steak stone coming, and I can’t wait to try it.
A steak stone is a non-porous rock that you pre-heat, and then set your food on top of to cook. Unlike a salt brick, it doesn’t impart any additional flavors to your food. It can reach high heat levels though, resulting in a great sear that’s ideal for meat, fish, vegetables, and more.
Enjoy perfectly seared meat and sides at home with the help of your steak stone!
The steak stone is a perfect way to enjoy your hibachi-style favorites right in your own home. This set comes with everything you need for an entire meal:
- A steak stone with stainless steel holder
- Three ceramic bowls for sauces
- A ceramic tray for sides
- Bamboo platter
Once you heat your stone, you can cook everything right at the table. I like to do the meat first for a nice sear, and then while it’s resting, cook some vegetables up for a side.
You’ll get a beautiful browned outside and a tender, juicy inside on your meat. It’s all the flavor of going out to a restaurant, without having to leave your home!
Alternatively, you may place your steak stone in the refrigerator overnight and then use it for a charcuterie board. Add meats, cheeses, fruits, and sauces to create an elegant spread that stays chilled for hours!
How do you cook steak on a stone?
Here is how to cook steak on a stone:
- Heat the stone to the desired temperature (generally 500+ degrees Fahrenheit)
- Remove with tongs or heat-resistant gloves and place into stainless steel holder
- Set holder with stone into the bamboo platter
- Season your meat as desired, then place directly on the stone
- Cook for 8-10 minutes per side for medium-rare steak
You may need to adjust your time up or down based on the thickness of your steak, the exact heat of your stone, and what level of doneness you prefer for your steak.
For a more well-done steak, feel free to cut your steak into slices after the initial sear on both sides. Then cook each strip until desired level.
How do you heat up a steak stone?
Here is how to heat up a steak stone:
- Place the stone in your home oven or grill
- Leave for 30-40 minutes on the highest grill setting or
- Cook for 40 minutes in a 540-650 degree oven
Gas ranges may use the flame on an open burner to heat the stone. Be extremely careful and make sure you utilize heat resistant gloves when handling the stone.
If you are unsure if the stone is hot enough, carefully pour a teaspoon of water onto the stone. If it sizzles and evaporates in 10 seconds or less, then the stone is ready.
How long does a steak stone last?
A steak stone can last for many years. It is made from Basalt, one of the least porous rocks. However, a small amount of liquid may still seep into it over time, eventually causing discoloration and breakdown. With proper care, though, you can expect at least 10 years out of it.
In fact, there are Basalt carvings dated as far back as 1750 B.C. While they don’t get cooked on every day, I’d say that’s a testament to the strength of the material!
How do you clean a steak stone?
