Do you remember the Tamagotchi we had as kids? I totally left mine in my locker over the weekend once, and that was the end of my poor digital pet. Hopefully now that I’m older, I fare better with the Star Wars R2-D2 Tamagotchi. Who could resist a portable robot companion?
The Star Wars R2-D2 Tamagotchi allows you to care for and play with the galaxy’s favorite Droid companion. This pocket pet is on a small chain, so it’s portable anywhere you go. That’s great, since you’ll need to feed, clean, and play with him to keep him happy.

A blue plastic egg-shaped case encloses a small monochromatic LCD screen. On that screen, you’ll be able to care for your very own R2-D2 Droid.
Like any type of pet, you’ll need to take good care of your Droid. Make sure he’s always charged, clean up after his space adventures, and play to keep him entertained!
This nano Tamogotchi comes with two mini games installed from the start: Firefighter and Holochess. As you care for your companion, you’ll level up to unlock 7 more mini games as well.
Not only that, but R2-D2 learns up to 19 different skills along the way. The better you care for your pocket Droid, the more cool things he can do!
How does R2-D2 Tamagotchi work?
Here is how the R2-D2 Tamagotchi works:
- Remove the tab to engage the battery and turn the Tamagotchi on
- Set the clock using the buttons (more below on those). Accurate time is important so that the Tamagotchi sleeps when you do.
- R2-D2’s bedtime is 10pm, based on your clock setting
- It will make Droid noises when the Tamagotchi requires attention
The three buttons on the Tamagotchi unit itself are the controls and navigation menu:
- The A button (far left button) changes your selection
- B button (middle) confirms your selection
- C button (far right) is used to go back. This is particular useful if you happen to miss a prompt
The sound may be toggled off, if preferred, by pressing the ‘A’ and ‘C’ button simultaneously. Then, toggle between “on/off” with the A button, and confirm with ‘B’.
Just focus on responding to your Droid’s requests to care for it. You can even expect fun cameos from C-3PO, Sandtroopers, Boba Fett, and even Master Yoda!
How do you care for R2-D2 Tamagotchi?
To care for your R2-D2 Tamagotchi:
- R2-D2 will alert you when it needs something and display a coordinating icon
- Use the A button to toggle the correct item or action. For example, if he’s “hungry” you’ll want to provide a battery charge
- Once on the correct selection, press the B button to confirm
- The A button is used to escape from enemy ships as well. This only applies to later game R2-D2 with pilot abilities
Sometimes your Tamagotchi will want to play. You’ll want to follow the manual instructions for the specific game you’re playing, as each set of controls is different.
For example, though, in Firefighter, you’ll want to press the ‘A’ button repeatedly as fast and as many times as you can before time runs out. In Holographic Chess, you’ll be prompted to press a button or sequence of buttons (such as ‘A’ or ‘B-B’). I’m having QuickTime game flashbacks!
What happens when R2-D2 Tamagotchi dies?
Thankfully, as robots never truly die, your R2-D2 Tamagotchi just starts a new cycle every 3 days. The worst-case scenario is that, with improper care, the Jawas come and take him away.
Don’t worry though, you’ll get another chance to train your next Droid more thoroughly. Just like the retro classic, there’s a full reset button on the back that may be pressed with a pin at any time.
