DIY projects are so self-rewarding whether you’re an adult or a child. Yinz can’t put a price on the time spent with children. The Creativity for Kids Store has numerous DIY crafts that embrace creativity and science. One of my favorites is the Make Your Own Firefly Light craft kit. It’s a fun activity for parents and children to do together.
Shrink plastic sheets have been around since the early 70’s. The sheets are made of polystyrene plastic that may be colored with felt-tip pens, colored pencils, or acrylic paint. When heated in the oven, the shrink plastic sheets actually shrink to about 1/3 of their original size while maintaining their initial color and shape.
Color, bake, and create your own DIY Firefly Light
On warm summer nights, my cousin and I always looked forward to collecting fireflies. We would use a small jelly jar with a lid that had holes poked in it and run around the yard after dusk. The objective was to snatch up as many of those beautiful creatures as we could and watch our jars glow. We didn’t want to harm any in the course of our play and would release them shortly after they were captured.
The Make Your Own Firefly Light craft kit by the Creativity for Kids store is a beautiful way to keep the fireflies glowing. The kit is all inclusive, and you create your own DIY firefly light without even leaving your house. The DIY kit includes glow in the dark shrink film fireflies and stars, colored pencils, a pencil sharpener, color stickers, glow in the dark stickers, faux grass, a clear jar with lid, and 12 LED firefly lights. Two AAA batteries are required for the LED lights but not included.
Creating your firefly light jar is easy and tons of fun. Select all the fireflies and stars you want to color, and use the included pencils. If your colored pencils begin to dull while crafting your firefly light jar, just use the pencil sharpener! Once finished, place the colored items on foil in a sheet pan, and pop into the oven. If you remember Shrinky Dinks from when you were a kid in the 80’s, this should be familiar! When finished, decorate your jar with the faux grass, glow in the dark stickers, and the masterpieces you have created. The string of LED lights adheres to the lid with the button toggling your lights on and off.
