Crystal trees work using evaporation and chemistry. A paper or cardboard tree design is placed into a shallow dish with a solvent. The tree absorbs the solvent and as the water begins to evaporate, it leaves a higher concentration of chemical reagent. Once the reagent reaches a critical mass of saturation, it crystallizes on the paper.

This Magic Growing Christmas crystal tree kit comes with everything you need to grow two small Christmas trees right at home. In the box, you’ll find two 3D tree-shaped paper structures and two petri-dish shaped bases. Begin by setting the trees into the bases and fluffing out their branches for maximum volume. Add the special growth liquid to the base of the tree, but feel free to dot some over the branches too. The paper tree will absorb the liquid and become saturated.
The chemistry of your Magic Growing Christmas Tree starts as the water portion of the growth liquid begins to evaporate. The more that evaporates, the more it elevates the concentration of the chemicals. Once they reach a critical concentration, they’ll begin to blossom into crystallized leaves on your tree! These microcrystals begin to show up around 8 hours into the experiment, reaching full bloom in about 24 hours. The kit includes one green crystal tree and one rainbow crystal colored tree.
As a STEM project, growing crystal trees at home is not only fun but educational for the kids too!
