Whoa, you bounced that ball so fast it looks like it’s going to melt! I’m not sure you should pick it up, it looks pretty hot. It’s just a Waboba lava ball that changes color in the sun? So, I won’t get third degree burns from playing with it? Whew!
A lava ball does what just about any other rubber toy ball does – it bounces. What makes it so unique, though, is the color changing properties of the cracks in the ball. When exposed to the sun, it changes from yellow to red, making it look like a real ball of lava.

While I definitely don’t recommend picking up a fresh chunk of lava, I do recommend getting an awesome lava ball! This isn’t just your average bouncy ball, but rather an exciting color-changing toy that’s great for both kids and adults.
The ball itself is a non-toxic rubber-based ball. It’s about 2.5” in diameter, so it’s just slightly smaller than a standard baseball. It’s mostly round, aside from the intentional “cracks” in the surface, which means it’s super bouncy!
A lava ball goes about 10 feet high on a normal bounce but can go as high as 30 feet. The better your conditions are, such as on smooth, hard ground, will result in a better bounce. It will continue to bounce a few times with the kinetic energy, a little lower each time.
Of course, if you happen to hit one of the cracks directly on the floor, the ball won’t bounce as high. However, the cracks are what make this ball truly unique! When exposed to UV rays, it causes the yellow to turn red, like real lava!
UV rays are most often found in – you guessed it – the sun! Take the ball outside on a sunny day for maximum exposure. If you want to play inside with the same effect, put it under a UVA/UVB lamp for about 20 seconds. Most bulbs designed for reptiles have this!
