A bunch of us are getting together this weekend, are you coming? I can’t wait to take the boat out and try our giant floating water mat for the lake. I’m ready for the ultimate in rest and relaxation!
A floating mat, sometimes also called a floater mat or water pad, is a rectangular piece of foam that floats. It can be tied to a boat or dock and provides a spot for a number of on the water activities. When not in use, it’s rolled into a tube for simplified storage.
Break out the floating mat for the lake and create an instant party spot on the water!
A floating mat for the lake is sure to be your hub for summer fun! It’s designed for use on still water, so pack it along for the pond, the lake, or even use it in a large pool.
This giant 18’ x 6’ rectangular floating mat is perfect for boating. In fact, I think it’s one of my favorite additions to a party barge setup!
With a weight capacity of 1,320 pounds, it holds an average of 6-7 adults or 10+ kids easily. Lay on the mat and lounge, stand up and try to wrestle other people off, or sit around drinking and playing games. A floating mat is incredibly versatile for all sorts of activities!
The water pad is made from a high-density 3-ply foam that’s about 1.3 inches thick. That’s what gives it such a great weight rating. Note that you will, however, get wet on it – the mat is designed to sink slightly under pressure. You’ll still want to be wearing those swim trunks!
When you’re done for the day or the season, pack your floating boat mat away for easy storage. It rolls up into a tube, then secures with two tie straps. It’s basically a giant version of a Yoga mat!
How do you secure a floating water mat?
- Unroll the mat so that it is floating on the water’s surface
- Attach the bungee tether to the hole in the middle of one end of the mat
- Use the carabiner to connect the tether to a stationary object, such as a boat or dock
It’s always best to place it in an area where the view is not obstructed (such as behind the dock) for safety.
This floating lake mat comes in a variety of high visibility colors. They’re designed to make you visible to other boaters sharing the water to reduce the chances of a collision. However, it’s still always important to watch your surroundings!
Note that the tether is not designed for towing, and the boat should remain stationary while the mat is attached to it.
Why are foam water mats so expensive?
The short answer to why foam water mats are so expensive is the materials. Thick, closed cell foam is a more costly raw material than the thin vinyl used in an inflatable.
However, unlike an inflatable, these mats cannot be popped. As long as you don’t sustain damage (like a boat running it over), you can expect many years of use out of a floating boat mat.
